There can be an enormous amount of fear, worry and anxiety surrounding divorce. How will I live on my own? How can I make ends meet? What will happen to the children? Is there something wrong with me because I couldn’t make the relationship work?
If you’re going through a divorce and feel saddled with doubt, fear and anxiety, there is hope. Suzy Brown, author of Radical Recovery: Transforming the Despair of Your Divorce into an Unexpected Good, explains the correlation she recognized between certain military principles and how divorcees prep for post-divorce life.
4 Military Principles to Arm Yourself for Battle
Try using these four simple but powerful concepts that Brown mentions to begin to reshape your way of thinking and start the healing process:
- Set realistic goals – Spend some time thinking about what you want your new life to look like. Articulate that ideal into some concrete, realistic goals, write down the goals and begin planning the steps to take you there.
- Get fit – Taking care of yourself is of utmost importance during and after divorce. Eating right and exercising will help reduce stress, uplift you mentally and help you create a positive atmosphere in your life.
- Use positive self-talk – You may not have the power to change certain factors surrounding the divorce, but you do have the power to change how you view it. Remind yourself constantly that you are strong deep down and focus on the positive.
- Control your response – Soldiers practice acting calm in dangerous and scary situations, and this is excellent practice for those going through a divorce. When anxiety creeps up or a scary thought starts to take root, practice calm responses. Do things that are relaxing and comforting for you, such as going for walk or listening to music.
