The United States Bankruptcy Court divides most states into separate districts to help organize the local court systems for handling bankruptcy claims. For Dallas residents, we reside in the Northern District of Texas that also includes the divisions of:
- Abilene;
- Amarillo;
- Fort Worth;
- Lubbock;
- San Angelo; and
- Wichita Falls.
The Northern District of Texas has public records of the number of bankruptcy filings in their courts for every month. The reports made public so far for 2011 show that filings have remained fairly consistent from month-to-month and have decreased slightly compared to the same months in 2010.
The Northern District bankruptcy filings currently reported through August 2011 are as follows:
January 2011: 624 Chapter 7 filings, 1,091 Chapter 13 filings;
February 2011: 613 Chapter 7 filings, 757 Chapter 13 filings;
March 2011: 899 Chapter 7 filings, 649 Chapter 13 filings;
April 2011: 827 Chapter 7 filings, 798 Chapter 13 filings;
May 2011: 755 Chapter 7 filings, 701 Chapter 13 filings;
June 2011: 666 Chapter 7 filings, 811 Chapter 13 filings;
July 2011: 663 Chapter 7 filings, 717 Chapter 13 filings; and
August 2011: 741 Chapter 7 filings, 873 Chapter 13 filings.
While there were instances of other chapters filed in the Texas bankruptcy courts during this time, Chapter 7 and 13 make up the majority of the filings.
Seeing these numbers show that bankruptcy is not a new situation for Texas courts to deal with. This means that there are plenty of resources in your area for help with bankruptcy filing, especially Dallas bankruptcy attorneys.
