Jennifer Lopez officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck in Los Angeles on August 20, 2024, which coincidentally was the couple’s second wedding anniversary.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer filed the paperwork herself, without legal representation, on August 20. She indicated that the couple had been separated since April 26, 2024.
No Prenup in Place
Lopez and Affleck, who did not sign a prenuptial agreement before their marriage, are now facing the complexities of dividing their assets. Without a prenup, any income or property acquired during their marriage is considered “community property.” This means both spouses are viewed as equal owners of any property, income, or debt accumulated during their time together, regardless of who earned or purchased it.
Ben Affleck’s Net Worth
Ben Affleck, who has an estimated net worth of $150 million according to Celebrity Net Worth, has continued to work steadily throughout his marriage to Lopez. During their two years of marriage, Affleck starred in several successful films, including “The Flash,” “Air,” “The Instigators,” “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” and “Hypnotic.”
Affleck, who is also a father of three, recently completed filming for “The Accountant 2,” set to be released in April 2025. Additionally, the couple collaborated on the upcoming film “Unstoppable,” where Affleck served as a producer alongside his longtime friend Matt Damon, while Lopez starred in the drama.
In 2023, Affleck also secured a multimillion-dollar deal with Dunkin’ Donuts, which included a donation to his non-profit organization, the Eastern Congo Initiative.
Jennifer Lopez’s Net Worth
Jennifer Lopez, with an estimated net worth of over $400 million according to Celebrity Net Worth, has also been busy during their marriage. Since tying the knot in July 2022, Lopez has starred in several movies, including “Atlas,” “Mother,” and “Shotgun Wedding.”
In addition to her acting career, Lopez released a $20 million self-funded project, “This Is Me… Now: A Love Story,” which documented her rekindled romance with Affleck. The project accompanied her ninth studio album, “This Is Me…Now,” though it only peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200.
Lopez also launched her cocktail line, Delola, in April 2023, which she described as “unique, mixology-level ready-to-enjoy cocktails designed for elegant, effortless entertaining as part of a thoughtful lifestyle.”
The Stakes in Their Divorce Proceedings
The absence of a prenuptial agreement means that everything purchased or earned during their marriage is considered community property. In May 2023, Affleck and Lopez bought a $60 million mansion in Beverly Hills. A month before Lopez filed for divorce, the couple listed the home for $68 million.
It remains unclear whether the former couple will split the profits equally once the property is sold. Affleck has since moved out of the mansion and purchased a $20 million bachelor pad in Pacific Palisades, California. Meanwhile, Lopez has been spotted house hunting on several occasions.
In July 2024, reports surfaced that Lopez was preparing to fight for half of Affleck’s $150 million fortune, claiming she covered many of their marital expenses, while Affleck frequently “grumbled about spending money.”
According to sources, Lopez felt that Affleck “mooched” off her wealth during their time together. One insider noted, “One of the little-known secrets is Jennifer paid for much of their marital expenses and now she feels he owes her. She’s adding up all those private jet bills she puts on her plastic, the hotels and meals, clothes, coffee runs, gas. The high cost of living was done on her dime. She paid the lion’s share for that $60 million mansion they bought, too.”
In her divorce filing, Lopez waived her right to spousal support and requested that the court not award Affleck any support either.
